1. Cygwin
The Cygwin tools are ports of the popular GNU development tools for Microsoft Windows. They run thanks to the Cygwin library which provides the UNIX system calls and environment these programs expect.
With these tools installed, it is possible to write Win32 console or GUI applications that make use of the standard Microsoft Win32 API and/or the Cygwin API. As a result, it is possible to easily port many significant Unix programs without the need for extensive changes to the source code. This includes configuring and building most of the available GNU software (including the packages included with the Cygwin development tools themselves). Even if the development tools are of little to no use to you, you may have interest in the many standard Unix utilities provided with the package. They can be used both from the bash shell (provided) or from the standard Windows command shell.

Cygwin/X Overview
Cygwin/X is a port of the X Window System to Cygwin; Cygwin provides a UNIX-like API on the Win32 platform. As of 2004-03-09 the supported Win32 platforms are Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003.

LiveCD будет загрузить тремя способами: стандартным ("CD boot"), со сжатого образа файловой системы посредством NTLD ("loop back boot") и в среде Windows под управлением coLinux ("coLinux virtual boot"). В последнем варианте пользователь просто вставляет диск в привод CD-ROM, после чего с него автоматически инсталлируется coLinux, X-сервер и запускается Knoppix. coLinux сейчас доведен до состояния, когда он гоняет почти все известные дистрибутивы и не жюжжит.

Сравнивать Cygwin, coLinux и X-Win32 тоже не фонтан - это совершенно разные продукты.

Да и Cygwin -- это совсем не Linux. Можно назвать его Unix workalike, но не "Linux on Windows".

Да и тем, кто почему-то при слове "Unix" машинально думает о Linux, надо малость просветиться, дабы не удивлять окружающих узостью кругозора...
